Thurston, Hugh A
Scotland's Dances
In the three decades since this book was written there has been a greatly increased interest and participation in Scottish dancing, and the increase has been especially pronounced outside the British Isles. Today thousands of people perform the traditional Highland and Country dances of Scotland in countries such as Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, and even in countries where English is not the prevailing language. Of these dancers and even of their teachers it is a fact that many have never even visited Scotland, much less grown up with a knowledge of the history and traditions of that country which in subtle ways have influenced the dancing and the music to which the dances are performed. It is especially important for these overseas dancers and teachers to have at their disposal resource material about this background to their dancing.
Hugh Thurston's book, long out of print, has been recognized as one of the authoritative sources of such information, written in a readable style, and providing much interesting material about the sources of the common dances.
We are pleased to have been permitted to publish this reprint edition, thereby making Dr. Thurston's work accessible to the current generation of dancers and instructors - a much wider audience than that prevailing at the time the book first appeared.
